This month’s art show explores the two themes of this Irish Easter: resurrection and rebellion. One hundred years ago, Irish republicans rose up against the British and proclaimed the Irish Republic. Dramatic scenes played out across the island, but the most concentrated fighting occurred in Dublin, where scores of civilians and combatants were killed. The scale of the violence and resulting destruction shocked the citizens of Dublin and swayed public opinion away from the republican cause. The British response, which included mass-arrests and executions, was brutal enough to erode whatever support they may have earned.
Today, the rebellion of 1916 is referred to as The Rising, which introduces the second of our themes. It cannot escape at least an ironic notice that Irish history has been pegged to a conflict between Christians, to whom the resurrection, and forgiveness, are central.
In these collected pieces, which hang against the backdrop of a city itself heavily invested in rebellion and resurrection, we invite your consideration.
