Young Americans

A show Curated by Tony Campbell

“I heard the news today, Oh boy” David Bowie quotes Lennon in his song “Young Americans”

The song was recorded two days after President Nixon resigned from office. Bowie reflects an anxiety about America and its future, an anxiety that again is felt sharply today. Photography has been historically a tool to examine American culture, from the works of Dorothea Lange and William Eggleston to Robert Mapplethorpe and Nan Goldin.

Today’s photographers face an increasingly fragmented idea of being American; “American” identity is more complicated than our politicians would have us believe. A cookie cutter American dream is no longer tenable. The new American dream comes in many flavors, each with its own moral codes and value structure and they are all authentic American realities.

“Young Americans” is a photography exhibition at Treo, featuring the work of six artists who are University of New Orleans MFA alumni or current/recent UNO MFA students.

The Artists: Dane T Hanson, Ashley Hope, Brad Stire, Nina Schwanse, Dan Tague, and Meg Turner.
